“Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be Kind. Always.”
My work is an interpretation of the subconscious. In particular, our ability to find power and strength through struggle and vulnerability. The women in my portraits are those I know well or have felt a strong connection to, despite a brief meeting. I am motivated to tell their stories, capturing enigmatic expressions and gestures with sensitivity, intuition and empathy. In ‘Submerged’, the subject appears confident, hopeful and bravely looking forward despite the unspeakable situation she finds herself in. My intention is to build a connection with the viewer. To create something beautiful that illustrates a moment of understanding, to provide comfort through the uncomfortable, to empower and to communicate an atmosphere or mood.
Working in watercolour, ink, acrylic and cyanotype, I create realistic and semi-abstract works using loose, fluid lines, washes, vivid colours, wet-on-wet, layering techniques, salt and sometimes bleach. Inspired, by proxy, to the sea, my work often begins with a cyanotype print using seaweed collected from the local Dorset shores. I am fascinated by spiritual, meditative and mindfulness practices, and find the idea of conjuring power, strength, calmness and joy through magic, manifestation and nature deeply compelling. Drawn to psychedelic art, surrealism and art nouveau movements, I utilise symbolism to derive meaning through dynamic compositions, geometric shapes, organic subject matter and patterns. Through my use of materials, I explore the balance between having a meticulous, almost obsessive need for control and the need to just let go and allow things to happen as they are meant to.
Having taught Art and Photography for over 12 years in secondary education (with time spent as a Head of Art and Design), I am now fully dedicated to my own creative, professional practice. In recent years, my work has featured in exhibitions in Dorset and Devon, commissioned by patrons from UK, Ireland and Italy and is available to purchase as both originals and prints via online stores.
